AI stem separation is the process of taking a finished, mixed-down song — where every instrument is blended into a single stereo file — and splitting it back out into its individual parts. Each of those parts is called a stem: the vocals on one track, the drums on another, the bass, the guitar, the piano, and everything else.
An AI stem splitter does this with a model that has learned, from a huge amount of music, what a voice, a snare drum or a bass guitar tends to look like inside a mix. Give it a song and it estimates each source and writes it to its own stem — no multitrack session, no original recordings, just the final audio you already have.
That last point matters: AI-generated stems are an estimate of the original parts, not the studio multitracks the song was mixed from. On a clean, well-produced recording the results are remarkably good and easy to play along with. How good is the quality — are AI stems perfect?
AI stems are an estimate, not the original masters, so they are not flawless. On clean, modern, well-produced recordings they come out remarkably clear and easy to play along with; dense, lo-fi, live or heavily reverbed mixes are harder and can show some bleed or warble. Vocals usually separate cleanest, while bass and the catch-all “other” stem are the hardest.
